David Mackey – Featured Speaker

David comes to us from Kanata, Ontario. He is speaking Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm in Rm 149. His topic is about creating community with BuddyPress. Let’s get to know him…

I’m a Digital Marketing Consultant based in Kanata. I have 25+ years of experience building and supporting multi-tiered server applications and telecommunication systems. My recent programming and consulting experience includes six years of working with WordPress. I dream about reshaping the shopping experience with WordPress at https://modshopr.com.

I discovered WordPress in 2011 when I was looking for a better development framework for my first public website. Since then, WordPress has opened up into a full web application platform. I haven’t looked back since.

WordPress is a great platform where you can quickly create a web presence, but do you want more engagement? Do you want to take your web presence to the next step and build an online community? If this direction sounds exciting, then BuddyPress is the right plugin to get there with minimal fuss!

BuddyPress is a fun and flexible plugin that can be used to build online communities, teams and groups on top of the WordPress platform. BuddyPress let’s you add extended member profiles, activity streams, user groups, messaging, notifications and more.

If you come to the presentation, you will get great overview of what you can do with the BuddyPress plugin.

  • BuddyPress Introduction
  • BuddyPress Site Examples
  • How to install BuddyPress
  • How to configure BuddyPress
  • Demo of the BuddyPress User Experience

Although the installing and configuring BuddyPress is easy, you probably want to consider adding the plugin only after you already have a basic understand of how a WordPress website works.

Harold Ballard beat the leaf fan out me when I was growing up in the 70s. So sorry, I really can’t say anything positive about the Leafs. However, Toronto is full of exciting and vibrant people, and there’s always something fun to do here.
